Caligula - the emperor who loved to gamble!

Caligula - the emperor who loved to gamble!

Caligula has gone down in history as one of the most twisted and evil Roman emperors ever. But there is more to him than that! He was also a lover of gambling, and would often spend hours at the gaming table.

Most of his gambling activity seems to have taken place in private, with just a few trusted friends. But there are a few references to public games too. For example, in 39 AD he hosted a large-scale chariot race in which 12 teams competed for over 100,000 sesterces in prize money.

Caligula was clearly not afraid to risk big sums of money on his gambling games. In one famous incident, he is said to have lost an incredible 500 million sesterces (around $US 15 billion today) in a single night! It's no wonder that his subjects started calling him 'the crazy emperor'.

Although Caligula was mainly a gambler, he did also enjoy other casino games such as dice and poker. He was even known to cheat at times, using various techniques such as loaded dice or secretly marking cards.

Interestingly, Caligula wasn't the only Roman emperor who loved gambling. His predecessor Augustus was also known to be a keen gambler, and would sometimes play for high stakes against some of the most influential people in Rome.

So why did these Roman emperors enjoy gambling so much? One theory is that they saw it as a way of flexing their muscles and demonstrating their power over others. They could afford to lose vast sums of money without feeling the consequences, while ordinary people would have been ruined if they'd done the same thing.

Whatever the reason, it's clear that Caligula and Augustus were both addicted to gambling - and it cost them a fortune!

Enter the Caligula's world of gaming!

There's no need to introduce the infamous Caligula anymore. Numerous controversies and scandals have surrounded him, one of which is his avid interest in video gaming. Some say that it all began when he was crown prince and would spend hours upon hours playing games like "Animal Crossing" on the Nintendo DS. His passion for gaming only grew once he became emperor.

There's no doubt that Caligula loved video games– so much so that he would even create his own unique ones. One such game was called "Governing the Empire". It would require players to make decisions about running a state, similar to games like "SimCity". He would also play online multiplayer games with other Roman elites, often times winning due to his strategies and overwhelming tactics.

Most people know about Caligula's dark side, but what many don't know is that he was an excellent gamer. That being said, it's no wonder why some of the best minds in the gaming industry are trying to recreate some of his famous titles, like "Governing the Empire". In a way, we can say that Caligula has left behind a legacy in the gaming world and it's one that we should all be fascinated by.

How to play the twisted game of Caligula!

The twisted game of Caligula is a highly strategic, two-player game that can be played with regular playing cards. The aim of the game is to remove all of your opponent's cards from the table, while keeping as many of your own cards as possible.

To begin, each player is dealt seven cards, and the remaining cards are placed face down in the middle of the table to form a draw pile. The player who is first to lose all their cards (or who has the lowest score if both players run out of cards) is the loser.

Cards of the same rank as your opponent's card are wild. For example, if your opponent plays a two of clubs, then any two card can be played as a wild card. Aces are high, and two pairs cancel each other out.

To play, the player must place either one or two cards on the table, one after the other. Cards cannot be placed on top of another card - they must be placed side by side. When both players have no more cards left in their hand, the next player in turn starts by playing one card from their hand. The rest of the rules are as follows:

1) If an Ace is played then the next player must play either a two or another Ace. If a two is played, then the next player must play either three or another two. This pattern continues until a four is played, at which point the next player must play another number (e.g., five).

2) If you cannot play any more cards from your hand, you must draw one card from the draw pile and add it to your hand. If you still cannot play any cards, you must then pick up another card from the discard pile and add it to your hand (you can only pick up one card at a time). When you finally have enough cards to play again, you MUST continue where you left off - meaning that if you had just played two cards before picking up another card, you would now have to put down three cards).
